Looking at Coach Henkin’s sandbag system, the improvements in strength, power, and athleticism should be obvious, which is why it’s a great training method for athletes, military personnel, and for fat loss.

The versatility also applies to other trainees as well. I have a small studio with mostly Baby Boomer clients in their 50’s. These people have little experience with resistance training, if any. They want to lose some weight, feel better, and slow down the aging process, but they don’t want to spend several hours at the gym each week.

It’s fairly easy to teach someone how to use a sandbag. I have them do basic movements like squats, step ups, rows, and squat-press. I also have them do bodyweight lunges in different directions, along with various exercises with the TRX suspension trainer. Most trainers at a big box gym would have them sitting or lying down on weight machines.

The exercises done in a standing position helps with total body coordination since several muscles are required to work together. Besides making their movements more efficient this burns more calories, also. I also incorporate various glute bridges and planks. Many clients have had some injuries or issues in the past and by combining these exercises we have seen them make improvements and reduce pain.

I also add in some exercises with bands to increase reactive ability. There is a seemingly endless variety of movements that can be done with the sandbags, TRX, and bands, which keeps them from getting bored with the routine. KB’s are a great tool, but I’m a novice when it comes to them and I feel more comfortable with the sandbags.

It seems like people can self-adjust to the exercises with fairly minimal coaching, though Josh definitely has some unique twists in his program. These ‘Boomers are working on the same movements that give many Seniors difficulty – getting up from a chair (squatting), going up stairs (step ups), and bending over (lunges), along with reaching over head (presses).

This type of workout increases their fitness levels along with increasing their ability to function. They also love/hate doing rope training as part of their cardio. The lack of joint impact is an added bonus.

A client in his early 30’s is headed to Afghanistan this Summer and had a past hip injury. When doing weekend drills in full gear his back would sometimes flare up or get fatigued. He had been doing machine based training at a local gym.

After about 5 weeks of training with mostly sandbags and the TRX, he did weekend drills in full gear with no problem. Now he is progressing to some of the sandbag – TRX combo exercises for an additional challenge. I would imagine the sandbag backpack might help, also.

At 44, I’ve had my share of past injuries, but can train as hard as I want to with the sandbags. I can challenge myself and increase my athleticism at the same time. Just wish I had them about 20 years ago.

    Brian,
Absolutely outstanding, I will definitely plast it in a more prominent place on the site. I think those attending our certification will find there are some nuances to the sandbags that make quite a difference in the performance of the lifts and why they do them.

Whats up man. I am interested in learning about this LIFT program that you have a seminar scheduled in Scottsdale in July. i am getting my Elite 1 trainer as we speak and would love something like this to compliment it. Would you please send me some info on how I could set up a private session, what it would cost and when we can get started. I have just recently stumbled onto your website and it looks great. I will continue to search on your site for more info and I just subscribed to one of your threads. If you don’t do one on ones, is there someone who uses your system in the area. I just want to try it before I buy it. Thanks Jason Cox

    Hi Jason,
We are putting up more on the site soon! I believe running our programs in Philly and Florida will help us explain the system better.
