It is All About Personal Bests!

I was psyched, yep, really excited as this past week I was taught a big lesson myself. Usually I am not about doing one type of training exclusively. Even though I promote the Ultimate Sandbag, I am not dogmatic about only using them. However, because my health has been railed by repairing a genetic jaw issue, I thought NOW would be a good time to test out my methods as see their direct impact on training.

During my Strongman days heavy lifting was a daily occurrence, I hit some personal bests in those days of 275 in a push jerk and 530 deadlift with a belt. The down side? I would be quite stiff for days and at times walk around like a rod was in my back. Not really great if you were going to do any athletic based training. Yea, most people don’t tell you THAT part of heavy lifting!

So, my mission was easy, I was going to develop programs focusing on the Ultimate Sandbag and being complimented with the TRX and some kettlebell work. To be honest, I thought I could develop some lost athleticism, but wasn’t sure how my lifts would be impacted. You know all those videos I post every week? Those weren’t just random workouts, but ones I was using in my specific workouts.

Well, finally I felt like I was going to test out how my barbell lifts were impacted. Honestly, I was shocked!!!! First the deadlift, previously I would have strapped the belt on with anything over 415, now? A 485 deadlift with no belt and felt good! Push press? There were more than a few days where 245 was challenging, not today, 255 pretty easy! Yes, I failed at my attempt of 275, but not too bad not having done EITHER of these lifts with a barbell for about 5 months.

What did I learn? Yes, this type of training is not “just good for conditioning”, like many coaches would have you believe. Rather, it can be incredible for bringing up weak links in your body. It was obvious my trunk and hips got so much stronger where stress was taken away from the back and put in all the right places. I was also pleasantly surprised the upper body training impact that made pressing no big deal. I am excited to see what the future holds!

Let me know how these programs have impacted YOUR results and look for a great lower body power complex tomorrow!
