What Your Program Isn’t Doing!
Things are changing, whenever the leaders in an industry are evolving and changing the way things are done we all have to take notice. When classic ideas are being challenged or rehashed, we have to start reconsidering how we do things.
I love the term, “strength leaks”, that Strength Coach Steve Morris used to describe why he uses our Ultimate Sandbag. In an age when lifters, athletes, and fitness enthusiasts are becoming more and more of specialists. The ideas in sandbag training are needed even more!
The nay sayers still think getting strong with a sandbag is a ridiculous idea. However, they are still stuck on the old idea that everything is based off of load. Is that not how we measure who is strong?
Not at all, that is why famous old time strongmen performed body weight exercises such as hand balancing. This is why wrestling books from other cultures show a wide array of strength building exercises that worked a many different motions with anything but huge loads. Getting strong in many positions and ranges of motions should be a goal for all.
As I remind many coaches, the principle we all work by is progressive overload. This can come in many different forms:
Altering Speed
Body Position
Leverage
Range of Motion
I wanted to demonstrate how powerful this idea is by putting a new spin on the classic 5 x 5 training protocol for strength.
